Round 4 – July 2021

Introduction

Queensland Arts Showcase Program (QASP) was redesigned in response to COVID-19. Its purpose is to fund vibrant and accessible arts and cultural experiences for Queensland by individuals, organisations or collectives.

Applicants could apply for up-front, one-off grants of up to $30,000 (sole-funding) and up to $60,000 (co-funding).

Applications opened 1 May 2021 and closed 30 May 2021.

Outcomes

33 successful applications (38% success rate) secured total funding of $1,358,077.
Public announcement of successful grant recipients made August 2021.

General Feedback

Successful applications were able to clearly demonstrate how their proposed activity responded to the QASP published assessment criteria.

All applications were assessed and moderated by a panel of industry-based peer assessors. The panel provided the following general feedback for applicants:

  • Demonstration that your project is ready to be delivered and all elements have been considered and planned however, if there is something still to be confirmed or developed – please explain how you will manage rather than leaving unanswered questions.
  • If you have unconfirmed funding in your budget (e.g. other grants or ticket sales) consider outlining a Plan B if that funding doesn't eventuate.
  • Consider your partners as well as your audience in the marketing and evaluation of your project.
  • Only include relevant support material - if the connection of the support material to your project isn't obvious, provide an explanation.
  • Consider the naming protocols of your support documents (make them consistent and meaningful - e.g. Artist_X_CV.pdf instead of scan347.pdf).
  • Except where specified, do not include links in an application as they often go to generic pages or cannot be opened.
  • Make sure items listed in the budget are reflected and mentioned in your application.

  • Public announcement of successful grant recipients were made on 26 February 2021.

General Feedback

Successful applications were able to clearly demonstrate how their proposed activity responded to the QASP published assessment criteria.

All applications were assessed and moderated by a panel of industry-based peer assessors. The panel provided the following general feedback for applicants:

  • Avoid the use of overarching ‘feel good’ statements and instead provide sufficient information and evidence to back up statements made within the proposal.
  • Do not rely on intuition of the assessors, and specifically address the criteria in all descriptions.
  • Demonstrate the need for funding and include a clear, detailed and balanced budget with quotes for items over $500.
  • Make a compelling case for funding by including supporting documentation of objective opinions (published reviews etc.) about the quality of previous work; and include marketing and evaluation plans focused to the specific aims and objectives of the project rather than generic templates.
  • Use examples of product or services to demonstrate distinctiveness of the creative /cultural contribution.
  • Present a package that engages a consumer/audience and that has potential to be influential for other artists while maintaining uniqueness.
  • Demonstrate the benefit of the project and therefore what this investment of funds provides to the applicant/participants/community/sector?
  • TIP - Have someone who is completely unfamiliar with the project read the description to ensure it is clear and easy to understand.

Round 1 – October 2020

Introduction

Queensland Arts Showcase Program (QASP) was redesigned in response to COVID-19. Its purpose is to fund vibrant and accessible arts and cultural experiences for Queensland by individuals, organisations or collectives.

Applicants could apply for up-front, one-off grants of up to $30,000 (sole-funding) and up to $60,000 (co-funding).

Applications opened 14 July 2020 and closed 14 August 2020.

Outcomes

  • 15 successful applications (14% success rate) secured total funding of $642,249.
  • Public announcement of successful grant recipients were made on 1 October 2020.

General Feedback

Successful applications were able to clearly demonstrate how their proposed activity responded to the QASP published assessment criteria.

All applications were assessed and moderated by a panel of industry-based peer assessors. The panel provided the following general feedback for applicants. Successful applicants:

  • Provided a budget that is well-planned, realistic and accurate (income and expenditure must balance) and includes vendor quotes particularly for eligible large item costs.
  • Demonstrated how their project related to the objectives, and addressed relevant parts of each assessment criteria stated in the funding guidelines.
  • Demonstrated clearly why the creative development phase of the project needs to be supported and how the creative development relates to the broader project.
  • Provided a clear outline of the major goal and outcome of the project.
  • Provided well-considered evaluation plans that demonstrate clearly how the project will be evaluated against its aims and intended impact. How will you measure success? Or how will you learn from what has not been successful? Counting the amount of social media likes is not sufficient for an evaluation.
  • Included required support material.
  • Outlined the benefits for digital delivery of the project particularly for development of web and online applications.
