Protect the Great Barrier Reef

Research through cultural institutions such as the Queensland Museum Network in collaboration with national and international research organisations are increasing knowledge about the Great Barrier Reef. Indigenous arts centres have used arts and culture to raise awareness of the Great Barrier Reef and other Queensland natural resources.

Research

The Queensland Museum Network is custodian of internationally significant marine faunal collections, including corals. The Queensland Museum Network partners with world class research organisations and plays an important role in education with regard to conservation and sustainability of the Reef.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland (MTQ) explores the natural and cultural heritage of the state’s northern region, including the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics. MTQ houses an internationally important collection of Acropora corals and galleries, including Colour: Secret Language of the Reef and Discover Tropical Queensland, and the 18th century shipwreck, HMS Pandora.

Backing Indigenous Arts

Backing Indigenous Arts is a Queensland Government initiative designed to create economic opportunities and build sustainable and ethical Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts industries in Queensland. Projects funded through the Backing Indigenous Arts programs, including Indigenous Regional Arts Development Fund and Queensland Arts Showcase Program, raise awareness about the need to project Queensland’s marine life. 

 

Regional Arts Development Fund

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a long-running partnership between the Queensland Government and local governments to support local talent, unite communities and celebrate the arts across the state. Project funded through the Regional Arts Development Fund have also supported environment themed arts project which raise awareness about Queensland's environment.
