Lendlease Construction Update: Upcoming piling works and changed traffic conditions

Major works starting from Friday 9 October will be occurring at New Performing Arts Venue (NPAV) project site, including piling works, to support the construction of the foundations of the theatre structure.

Piling works

From Friday 9 October 2020 piling works will begin within the construction site located on the corner of Russell Street and Grey Street.

These works will involve drilling holes into the ground and back-pouring concrete to provide reinforced and structural support for the new theatre.

The piling works will take approximately five weeks to complete, weather permitting.

What to expect?

  • On site there will be Increased movement of heavy machinery, such as excavation and cranes, to facilitate construction activity
    • approximately 15 truck movements per day (13 – 15 October)
    • six semi-trailers will be exiting the site via Grey Street to Vulture Street across three days (13 – 15 October).
  • Traffic control will be in place to ensure the safe entry and exit of vehicles from the site.
  • Some construction noise, dust and vibration will occur; however every effort will be made to minimise these impacts including ensuring machinery is operating only when required, and noise and vibration monitoring will also be in place.

Traffic changes

From 12 October 2020, the perimeter of the project construction site will be extended outwards on both Grey Street and Russell Street, and will require the installation of safety barriers and fencing to contain the area.

These traffic changes are necessary to accommodate the new site boundary and to ensure the safety of pedestrians, businesses and road users, and will be in place until the construction of the new theatre is complete, which is currently scheduled for the end of 2022.

What to expect?

  • Reduced traffic speed to 20km per hour
  • Removal of on-road bicycle lanes
  • Pedestrian access routes will be maintained, with alternative routes provided and signed.
  • The passenger drop-off zone in Russell Street will have restricted access under the control of traffic controllers from 6:30am – 6:30pm. Due to large machinery entering and exiting the site.Vehicles will be asked to seek an alternate drop off location along Grey Street.
  • Removal of the right-hand turn into the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) car park from Grey Street. Patrons will be able to access the BCEC car park via a left-hand turn from Grey Street as per the below map.

The majority of construction work will be carried out between 6:30am and 6:30pm Monday to Friday. Timing of this work is subject to weather conditions and construction constraints.
