Funding announced for new First Nations Cultural Centre

The Palaszczuk Government is furthering its commitments to arts and culture, with $2 million allocated in this week’s Budget to assess options for a new First Nations Cultural Centre in Brisbane.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government is exploring the potential development of a new Centre that would showcase First Nations cultures from across Queensland and would be a drawcard for local tourism.

“Australia is an ancient land with the oldest living continuous cultures in the world,” Minister Enoch said.

“Establishing a centre for First Nations Cultures would help tell important stories and share knowledge that has been passed down through thousands of generations.

“It will also help inform people about Queensland’s history and be a place where the past can be truthfully acknowledged, which will help lead us forward towards a more inclusive future.”

Minister Enoch said $2 million over two years will go towards developing an options assessment that will look at small to large scale proposals.

“The options assessments would also help advise how unique First Nations cultures could be best presented through a dedicated centre.”

This year’s Budget also includes $5 million over two years to modernise the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) through the installation of LED lighting.

“QPAC will be an even brighter attraction with an investment of $5 million to install energy efficient LED lighting,” Minister Enoch said.

“A total $9 million over three years from 2018-19 will also help continue the implementation of sustainability and energy efficient measures at the Cultural Centre.

“Millions of visitors enjoy the Cultural Centre each year, drawn by the myriad of entertainment and cultural activities that take place all year round.

“The heritage-listed Cultural Centre, home to the State’s flagship arts and cultural institutions, plays a crucial role in housing Queensland’s cultural treasures and it is vital that we look after these assets for current and future generations,” Minister Enoch said.
